Problem:
The Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) sector in East Africa faces fragmented and poorly understood demand-side financing structures, with limited insights on how SMEs access capital, how finance flows are structured, and how regulatory frameworks (including securitisation of DRE assets) enable or constrain investment in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Financial aggregation addresses the huge chasm between global finance and small-scale energy needs.

Solution/Outcome:
A comprehensive mapping study was conducted to analyse demand-side actors, financing flows, and capital market regulations relevant to DRE SMEs. The study combined ecosystem mapping with regulatory analysis of securitisation frameworks. The study provided actionable evidence on the barriers and potential market enablers in East Africa thus informing key initiatives linking global finance to small scale energy.
